  1. In the strictly Romantic repertoire, he remains unparalleled. His singing technique was astonishing. His teacher was the great baritone Antonio Cotogni, unanimously considered the greatest baritone of the 19th century and Verdi's favorite baritone; but Lauri-Volpi perfected his technique studying with his wife Maria Ros, a lyric soprano who, in turn, had studied singing with a descendant of Manuel Garcìa senior, the first Almaviva in Rossini's Barbiere. I

  2. Unparalleled, right...
    I never liked him. He is always singing as if in some state of exaltation. His singing is rough and has no finesse. If he was a true dramatic tenor, that could pass, but he is not a real dramatic tenor either. And light lyric repertoire is clearly not for him. A strange bird.
